Whereas communalism is often attributed to British colonial policies of divide and rule, in this book the emergence of communalism is studied in those areas of the subcontinent where British influence was less intrusive: the Indian states like Travancore, Baroda and Hyderabad. Apart from exploring the historical background to inter-religious relations, this book is also a study of indirectly ruled princely India, with strong emphasis on the las decades before independence.
