The central concern of this work has been the creation and enlargement of personal space within the given structure of gender relations, with its singular specificity of subordination of women to male superordinate authority. In the turbulent intellectual milieu of nineteenth century Bengal, it was the women`s question that came to occupy the central space from Raja Rammohun Roy to Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar and beyond. Originating essentially in an intellectual ambience the question inevitably cast its shadows upon the litterateurs of the age like Tagore, Saratchandra and Bankim.
