This book historicizes the world of Dickens`s later novels, relating them to the second half of the nineteenth century: to the modes of economic organization, the new relationships between classes, the structures of thought and feeling, the new rhetoric of progress with its silences as well its emphases that came into existence as a result of the transition from the early, deeply troubled phase of the nineteenth century to what has so often been called the `Age of Improvement`. The chapters, focusing on Dombey and Son, Bleak House, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend try to demonstrate that these novels, taken together, constitute a sustained and many pronged imaginative critique of the idea of progress, the idea on which official mid-Victorian England based its supreme self confidence.
