The history of how `others` were perceived and represented in the past in India has hardly been consciously worked upon by historians so far.
This monograph examines literary and epigraphic texts which share some similarities in order to find out how satisfactorily they convey to us the general attitudes to groups of new comers to Indian society in various capacities during the period under study.
The study is organized into four chapters: The Twin Burden. Historiography and Sources: Images of Raiders and Rulers. Meritorious Deeds, Sacred Sites and the Image of God as the Lord of the universe: and conclusions.
Two appendics and select bibilography further enrich the study.
