The book deals with rural silk producers and hundred years of silk development policy in Bengal. It analyses and compares silk policy in colonial Bengal, West Bengal, East Pakistan and Bangladesh. Based on a detailed archival and field study of one silk region, now divided between India and Bangladesh, it looks at the complex interplay of population growth, the com-mercialisation, household composition, household level decision making, the role of gender and related factors.
