The state of Meghalaya, formed on 21st January 1972, is a state of great and fascinating socio-cultural significance. Its heritage can be traced from the prehistoric times of Stone Age upto the present. Though comprising mainly of the matrilineal Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia – the state also houses many other lesser known communities such as the Hajong, Sakachep, Biate, Koch, Dalu, Margnar and Nepali. All these communities find space in this book. Cultural Heritage of Meghalaya looks at the state of Meghalaya exhaustively from the perspective of heritage documentation and maintenance. Through the 38 chapters written by experienced anthropologists and independent researchers, the book presents to the academic world the rich traditions found in the region, not only of the well-known locations/tribes/communities, but of lesser known areas/tribes/communities as well. This book will be of great help to academicians, researchers, students, and laymen interested in a comprehensive study of the region.
Queenbala Marak is Associate Professor at Department of Anthropology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya. She has authored several papers in International and National journals, and contributed chapters in edited volumes.
Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri is professor of Anthropology and currently working as the Director, National Museum of Mankind (IGRMS), Bhopal.
