The volume is a compilation of ten articles thematically grouped on the legacy of slavery and indentured labour in Surinam and the Caribbean. Part 1 presents primary archival evidence as a resource to digitize the locations of slavery’s uncommon perpetrators, merchants and slave owners throughout Europe. It also examines Diaspora communities; one looks at the integration of historical Indian communities or Hindustanis in Suriname and in the Netherlands while the other considers modern attempts at maintaining ties with Andean countries in the hope of bolstering co-development strategies for the future.
Part 2 deals with the topic of health within the Indian Diaspora. The chapters cover Suriname (with some focus on the Netherlands and the U.S.A.) and Trinidad. Part 3 examines Maroon life in Suriname and suggests a multipartite approach in studying Maroon material culture while another chapter reveals how research in neglected regions can bring much importance to Maroon history and society. It also addresses the ‘Maroon Diaspora’ in French Guiana and the Netherlands. It discusses the challenges Maroons face in their new homeland as well as the determination to maintain their traditional belief systems before displacement.

Lomarsh Roopnarine is Associate Professor of Caribbean and Latin American Studies at Jackson State University, US.
